After a two year break since his last solo outing, Chicago’s Ike Release returns to his own EPISODES label with the four track Watercolors EP. It follows on from and album and 12” on MOS and an EP on Machining Dreams, and comes after Ike has completed tours as part of Innerspace Halflife with fellow Chicagoan Hakim Murphy. As well as this, Ike is currently working behind the counter at Gramaphone Records in Chicago and had the honour of being the first to release on Smart Bar’s new label, North Side '82.
His atmospheric, rough edged house style is there in all its glory on opener ‘Apollo3’, which has a big and inviting groove and nebulous, grainy pads all making for a wide open and massively deep cut. ‘Guzzle’ is more menacing, with a frazzled bassline being pushed through a filter as it rides up and down next to prickly, ticking percussion. The dreamy but driven ’Socialite’ is full of airy, light emitting pads and resonant chords and finally ‘Watercolours’ is a hypnotic bit of spacey deep house that really sucks you in. Once again, Ike Release has cooked up some classy and contemporary Chicago house goods.
